Micromanagement Has to Go
The Power of Leaders Who Empower
3 Insights for Your Leadership Journey
Being micromanaged is debilitation. It’s difficult to give your intellect, energy, and passion because it doesn’t feel like anything you are going to do will matter anyway. However, it can be difficult on the other side of the coin. Training and trusting others to deliver excellence and results is difficult, even for people who don’t struggle with control.
If you care about avoiding micromanagement and empowering others, here are three principles to remember:
I. Managers Delegate. Leaders Empower.
What it means:
Taking things off your plate and putting them on someone else’s makes sense, but the intention behind the action is important.
A manager’s intent behind delegating is about themselves. Delegation occurs when a manager assigns specific tasks to their employees. These are often tasks the manager doesn’t want to do or doesn’t have time to do.
A leader’s intent behind empowering is about others. Empowerment enables others to be responsible for and take ownership of themselves, their actions, and the results.
II. Assumptions Set Us Up For Suffering
What it means:
Communication, or a lack thereof, is the number one cause of leadership failure. Instead of assuming team members know what you are empowering them to do, you must articulate the ownership you desire.
The number of leaders who assume their team members know the standards and expectations baffles me because assumptions set us up for suffering. Stop assuming and be direct about expectations.
III. Failure is Not Final, Failure is Feedback
What it means:
Empowering team members to take ownership of something can cause failure. While failure is scary, it can be a world-class teacher.
No one seeks or signs up for failure, and neither should you. However, it’s a part of the learning process to develop skills and mastery. Embrace the idea that team members will come up short and then, most importantly, watch how they respond. You find out a lot about what someone is made up in their response to failure.
