How to Boost Employee Productivity With This Simple Technique

Productivity is a source of confidence and happiness.

Most managers looking to deal with the increased pressure to improve productivity and profitability think the solution lies in major organizational change or significant investments in outsourcing or technology. While these can be valuable approaches, have you ever stopped to consider that the answer lies in getting managers to act like leaders?

If you care about boosting productivity in yourself or others, here are three principles to consider:

I. Not all jobs produce revenue, but all jobs are measured on productivity.

What it means:

Productivity, in its simplest form, is the ability of an individual or group to work efficiently within a certain amount of time to maximize output. This is most often measured by the quality of the work, progress on tasks, or outcomes delivered on time.

If you don’t produce, you won’t be happy. Being productive builds confidence and accelerates opportunities. Being highly productive over time results from a mix of factors: time management, motivation, talent, skills, personality, and even luck. While all of those factors are important, the one most often forgotten is support from others. Individuals can be productive alone, but they can be supercharged with the help of others.

P.S. I started using FocusMate to help improve my own Productivity. It simply pairs me with others, and it undoubtedly increases my focus and accountability.

II. People modify their behavior in response to being observed.

What it means:

It is kind of obvious, “People modify their behavior in response to being observed,” right? However, the data will blow your mind. When employees know someone else is observing them, productivity can increase by 20% to 50%!

What an opportunity to invite accountability into your own life and insert your leadership into the day-to-day of team members. It doesn’t matter if someone is a high performer or a low performer; if they are a self-starter or unmotivated, being observed by someone else will modify their behavior in a positive way.

Use this power wisely and well.

III. Being overcontrolling makes it painful to work with you and excruciating to work for you.

What it means:

This is where I start to feel like a hypocrite. Research clearly shows when people are being observed, their behavior improves. However, no one likes to be micromanaged.

There is something remarkable about leaders who balance empowering and being attentive to the details at the same time. It could be how they provide recognition to demonstrate they care. It could be how they coach or how they set clear standards.

What's most remarkable is that the vast majority of great leaders have every reason, because of their accomplishments, to control, but instead, they empower.
