Why the Best Leaders Don't Focus on Their Title
Stop obsessing over your title. Start focusing on impact.
Someone else is going to have your title one day. It doesn’t matter if you are the President of the United States, the Pope, the CEO, the CMO, or a Director. This doesn’t mean your title doesn’t matter, or that you can’t desire a certain job. However, the kind of impact you have is more important than the title.
If you care about your leadership and impact, this week is for you:
I. The price you pay for doing what everyone else does is getting what everyone else gets.
What it means:
It’s tempting to do exactly what other people do, but then you get what everyone else gets. Your actions are what shape your outcomes.
The application of this principle can be applied in many areas, but it’s true whether you are talking about work, money, relationships, or leadership. If you want different outcomes, following the herd most likely won’t get you there.
Most people don’t read books…you should
Most people waste time on social media…you shouldn’t
Most people don’t move their body every day… you should
Most people don’t stay focused and prioritize their day…you should.
II. Your leadership is temporary, but your impact on others is lasting.
What it means:
I was delivering a keynote to a group of 300 construction professionals when I said, “Your leadership is temporary, but your impact is lasting.” You can watch the clip here.
It was one of those quotes that was more for me than it was for them. I needed to be reminded during that season of my life that I only get to be (insert title) for so long. However, the impact on the people I got the opportunity to lead would be lasting.
A mentor told me early in my career, "As a leader, you can be a great example or a horrible warning. Be careful because people learn from both.”
III. If you are a good steward of what you have been put in charge of, you will get put in charge of more.
What it means:
Last week, I was in Atlanta, GA, delivering a new workshop called the Talent Edge (It’s a 3-hour workshop focused on Leadership, Retention, and Recruiting.) The next day, I got the opportunity to spend time with Kevin Henry, an Executive at the Pulte Group. He said, “If you are a good steward of what you have been put in charge of, you will get put in charge of more.”
A steward is someone who takes responsibility. When you get the opportunity to lead and are a good steward of that opportunity, you will be put in charge of more. Thus your opportunity to make a positive impact on more people.
Be a good steward.

Set Goals That Will Make Something Out Of You to Achieve Them (Video)
Goals are essential, but not for the reason you might think.
Achieving a goal makes you feel good and can even change your life. However, what's more important is what it makes of you while on the journey to achieve it.
Jim Rohn said, "Set the kind of goals that will make something out of you to achieve them."
