How to Focus on What Matters Most
The mind and heart crave order and prioritization.
Focus is what separates action from distraction. Focus is the habit of habits. As someone who has struggled with focus for a myriad of reasons, this week is as much for me as it is for you.
If you want to be a more focused leader, professional, and person, this week is for you.
I. What you focus on magnifies
What it means:
When you are looking for things that are wrong, you find them. When you are looking for things that are right, you find them.
People who focus on negativity and are skeptical find it. It becomes the fruit of their focus.
Conversely, people who focus on joy, gratitude, and positivity find it. It becomes the fruit of their focus.
My challenge to you for the rest of this week is to focus on energy enhancers, not energy detractors. Look for things that are right and good, you will find them. If the rest of the week seems too difficult, try it for the next 5 minutes.
II. A break and time spent not working are very different. One fosters focus, the other snaps it.
What it means:
Paul Graham wrote about the difference between a maker's and a manager's schedule. It has changed the way many leaders think about their schedule and time blocking. Regardless if you batch meetings or have big blocks for free thinking, everyone is susceptible to allowing their phone or distractions to ruin their productivity.
Being where your feet are is essential to performance. While there is nothing wrong with a break to sharpen your thoughts, getting lost in social media is another.
Whether you are using the 64-Day Excellence Planner or not to improve your productivity, be thoughtful about the breaks you take and whether they foster focus or snap it.
III. The heart of focus is prioritization.
What it means:
Don’t tell me you prioritize your family and constantly miss your kid’s games. Don’t tell you prioritize your employees, and never have one-on-one’s. Don’t tell me you prioritize employee development and never coach your team.
The heart of being focused on deciding what priorities are more important than others. If not, everything looks and sounds essential. Then, you will end up doing the things that are easy, not most important.

How to Increase Your Dedication (Video)
Commitment is when you put structure around something for when you no longer feel in love with doing it.
There is a big difference between desire and dedication, but both are important to your future success.
