A Team Goal is Good. A Shared Purpose is Better.
Purpose Brings Benefits
Leaders connect to the intangible.
They recognize a part of their responsibility to connect team members to something meaningful that they don’t see themselves. One way is a shared purpose.
Let’s get after it,
I. The best leaders understand that a common enemy is galvanizing, but a common purpose is inspiring.
What it means:
A common enemy can galvanize people to movement. While a common enemy is motivating, a common purpose will inspire action that a leader doesn’t even think is possible.
II. The best leader’s make the mundane work meaningful.
What it means:
The work you and your team doesn’t change, but the meaning behind the work can. Part of a leader’s job is to do the creative work to make that connection for themselves and their team members.
III. First purpose, then performance.
What it means:
Every leader cares about performance. However, to deliver results consistently, first, connect with purpose. It will guide your decision-making and behavior.

Three Key Leadership Behaviors (Video)
Most managers believe they are doing three key leadership behaviors well.
Gallup's research shows a surprising gap.
Here are the three areas:
1. Recognition for good work
2. Provides weekly feedback
3. Builds a collaborative team
The gap between perception and reality is why employee engagement struggles.
If you're a manager, ask yourself, are you doing these three things as well as you believe you are?
