The Myth of Work-Life Balance
Choose Integration Not Balance
There is this common belief that work-life balance is achieving an equal distribution of time, energy, and passion between your work and personal life. That there should be clear lines when you are working and when you aren’t allowed to work.
This might make sense in a utopian world without real responsibilities, consequences, or desires, but it’s not the real world. A perfect split is unrealistic because life is ever-changing and dynamic.
This week is for you if you have ever worried about work-life balance.
I. Your job is not to be busy; your job is to be productive.
What it means:
Being blindly busy isn’t a badge of honor; being productive is.
When you are productive at work, it’s fulfilling. Conversely, when you are unproductive, it’s hard to find fulfillment and purpose.
So, if you want to achieve better work-life integration, prioritize the most important and productive tasks daily to free up time tomorrow.
II. You can do anything, but you can’t do everything.
What it means:
Too often, leaders say yes to everything, leaving them swimming in a sea of mediocrity. There is a good chance you are being tasked with more responsibility because you have demonstrated the ability to execute.
While that should be viewed as a positive, recognizing that taking on too many commitments will increase stress and decrease productivity.
Be more selective about what you say “yes” to and “no” to.
III. A perfect 50/50 work-life balance split is unrealistic because life and work are dynamic not static.
What it means:
One of the biggest mistakes leaders make around work-life balance is expecting their personal and professional life to be a perfect split of time. While there could be seasons where there is an even split, more often than not it won’t be.
The demands on you can shift and change from one moment to the next. So attempting to be rigid with allocating time will lead to frustration and a sense of failure when imbalance occurs.
Instead, focus on “Being where your feet are.” When you are working out, work out. When you are at home playing with the kids, play with the kids. When you are working, work.
