Mastering Effective Leadership Communication

What it means:
Most managers think they are effective at communication because they are fearless when talking or having a difficult conversation. That couldn’t be further from the truth.
The best leaders understand that communication isn’t about what you say; it’s about what others do with what you say.

II. Effective communication includes listening and observing.
What it means:
Don’t fall for the trap of thinking that communication is all about what you write or say, it also about listening. One of my mentors constantly reminds me, “there is a reason God gave us one mouth and two ears.”
One of the best ways to do this is to distinguish the difference between hearing and listening. You could write a whole book about the topic, but a simple way to think about it is:
Hearing is with your ears, listening is with your mind.
III. Embrace the challenge of saying the same things in different ways to get to the hearts and minds of your people.
What it means:
For any leader to be an effective communicator, they must take on the role of the CRO. Which stands for “Chief Repetition Officer.” Most managers complain about having to repeat themselves.
If this is you, stop complaining. There are many things competing for your team’s attention, and to assume your voice is the only and most important one would be an awful assumption. Get creative, and keep communicating the most important things in slightly different ways.
