The Cadence of Effective Communication

Communication is the language of leadership

Effective communication is the language of leadership.

Unfortunately, too many leaders believe they are better at communicating with others than they are. There is this false belief that because you said something, it automatically gets to the hearts and minds of the people you are communicating with.

This week is for you if you care about being a more effective communicator.

I. Communicating has more to do with the audience than the person communicating.

What it means:

Communication is not about you; it’s about your audience.

Don’t be a bitter leader complaining about team members for not understanding your words. Everyone learns in different ways and connects with various styles of communication. Challenge yourself to find different ways to connect with your team to ensure they not only hear what’s being said but understand it.

If they don’t understand, it’s your fault, not theirs.

II. Address it directly.

What it means:

This week in the podcast, I told a story about having to address tough feedback directly with my 6th-grade football team's parents. In years past, I would have hoped things were clear, but no longer.

I now adopt a communication style to “address it directly.” This could be feedback, conflict, or behavior that’s not up the standard. A great way to think about this is through the lens of a question:

What is a behavior in someone else that could improve if you addressed it directly?

III. Your responsibility to communicate with others is a blessing, not a burden.

What it means:

For any leader to be an effective communicator, they must take on the role of the CRO, which stands for “Chief Repetition Officer.” Most managers complain about having to repeat themselves. If this is you, stop complaining and start embracing the challenge of saying the same things in different ways to reach the hearts and minds of your people.

Some people don’t have an active audience to influence and reinforce messages to, but you do. Having an audience to communicate with is a blessing, not a burden. You aren’t guaranteed an audience, and you don’t know when the words you say will run out of meaning, so make the most of it by repeating yourself often.
