Dan Campbell's Leadership is Authentic, You Should Model It

Stop being someone you aren't

Too many leaders try to be someone they aren’t; their team knows it. They are inauthentic over authentic.

Brené Brown wrote, “Authenticity is the daily practice of letting go of who we think we’re supposed to be and embracing who we are.”

Since people follow people, not titles, it’s time to be a more authentic leader.

Let’s get after it,

I. Authenticity is the foundation of trust, and trust is the cornerstone of leadership

What it means:

Trust is the center of any successful relationship. Being authentic to who you are and what you are becoming increases trust.

The formula for trust is simple: Consistency + Time = Trust

II. If you’re going to lead people you must be authentic because everyone else is already taken.

What it means:

If you try to be someone you aren’t, the truth eventually emerges. Learning from others and adopting best practices is important, but you can’t be them. You must be the continual best version of yourself.

III. Authenticity isn’t a weakness, it’s an invitation to loyalty.

What it means:

Being authentic can certainly be used against you. However, in the long run, it will attract loyal team members.

Use your gift,

Leaders is a Choice You Have to Keep Making

You don’t choose leadership once; you have to keep choosing it. Since leadership isn’t a title, it’s about the actions you take, the choice to lead has to be made continually.

The hardest part of leadership is hidden. It’s the wrestling match between the mind and the heart. Keep choosing leadership; the people around you need it, even if they don’t always show it.
