How to Encourage Employees to Persevere

Encouragement Goes to the Heart

You would not be receiving this newsletter today if it weren’t for a few specific people who encouraged me to persevere when things looked bleak.

The best part of encouragement is that it doesn’t cost anything, and you just have to light someone else’ candle.

If you want to be an encouraging leader, this week is for you.

I. When you encourage others, it goes straight to their heart.

What it means:

The word encourage comes from the prefix “en” to put into and the Latin word “core,” which means heart. So, to encourage means to put courage into someone else, which goes straight to their heart.

One of the first interviews I did on the John Eades podcast, Scott Cornwell, told me something I have never forgotten: “Everybody is going through something, whether you know it or not.”

If leaders knew the battles their team members were facing and how people felt about themselves, then they would be a whole lot more encouraging.

II. Encouragement isn’t about you, it’s about others.

What it means:

Many managers hesitate to encourage their team members because they feel uncomfortable. However, if managers stopped thinking about themselves and started thinking about others, they would take action.

If you could give someone else something that would help them and you refuse to do it, you are being selfish. I would rather you be uncomfortable and help someone else than you be comfortable and keep encouraging words to yourself.

III. A candle doesn’t lose anything by lighting another candle.

What it means:

The primary purpose of a candle is to give off light. However, a candle doesn’t lose anything when it lights another candle. The same is true when it comes to encouragement.

When you encourage others, you don’t become less encouraged. In fact, it has the opposite effect. Those that you encourage will pass the encouragement forward.
