Most leaders focus on results because that’s what they’re measured on.
Revenue. Metrics. Performance. And yes, results absolutely matter. But chasing the scoreboard doesn’t win the game. You don’t get exceptional outcomes by obsessing over the results. You get them by investing in the one thing that drives everything else: culture.
If you want better team results, this week is for you.
I. To get better team results, don't focus on the outcomes. Focus on the culture.
What it means:
There’s a simple truth that too many leaders miss:
Leaders create culture. Culture drives behavior. Behavior produces results.
That’s the Performance Pathway, and it changes everything. If you're not happy with the outcomes, don’t start with a new strategy or tool. Start with the shared values and beliefs that guide thinking and behavior.
II. The best leaders focus their culture on performance, not preference.
What it means:
A great culture isn’t about everyone being friends or having fun. It’s about clarity. It's about defining the behaviors that lead to winning and developing people. Great leaders make those behaviors simple, visible, and non-negotiable.
One of the biggest lessons I cover in one-on-one coaching is to help leaders ensure that what they are focused on is performance and not preference-based.
III. Everything on your team happens because you created it or you allowed it.
What it means:
This one stings, but it’s true. Every dynamic on your team, good or bad, exists because you either created it or allowed it.
When someone acts outside of the culture and nothing is said or done, you just told the rest of the team that behavior is okay. That’s how standards erode. Protect what matters. Have the hard conversation. Raise the bar, and then hold it.
