Great Leaders Talk Back to Imposter Syndrome

Train your internal dialogue

You’ve probably heard the voice.

The one that says, “You’re not ready,” or “You’re going to mess this up.”

It’s quiet, but it’s persistent. Left unchecked, it can hold you back from meeting your potential and becoming the leader you’re meant to be.

If you care about positive self-talk or imposter syndrome, this week is for you. Let’s get after it.

I. The words you say to youself are the most important words you say.

What it means:

Your internal dialogue shapes your identity more than external praise ever could. When that voice leans negative, it chips away at your confidence. But when it becomes intentional and empowering, it becomes your greatest asset.

Change starts with what you whisper to yourself when no one else is listening.

II. If you weren’t ready, you wouldn’t have the opportunity. And if you weren’t capable, you wouldn’t have the desire.

What it means:

Self-doubt often creeps in right before you step into something bigger. But opportunities don’t show up by accident. They appear because you're prepared, even if you don’t feel it yet.

And the desire to take on something meaningful? That’s not random either, it’s a signal of your potential. Trust that readiness and capability often show up disguised as fear.

III. Train your inner voice like you train your outer skills.

What it means:

Confidence isn’t just a feeling; it comes from within and is built through consistent daily repetition.

Like learning to speak in meetings, coach your team, or lead a presentation, your self-talk can be developed. The more reps you put in, encouraging yourself, the more automatic it becomes. And when you sow and act, it becomes a habit.
