How Leaders Balance Results and Employee Development For Success

There is a stark difference between servant and selfish leadership

There is constant pressure on managers and executives to deliver results.

While we could argue whether that’s good or bad, the hard truth is that the best way to evaluate a leader’s effectiveness is by the outcomes of their actions. However, great leaders understand that sustainable success is built on the fulcrum of balancing the achievement of short-term goals and developing their employees for the long-term.

If you care about results and people, this week is for you.

I. Great leaders are outcomes-focused with a servant’s heart and team first mentality.

Bad leaders are so concerned about their egos that they focus on delivering results at the expense of their people. It’s a “use for my gain” mentality. Conversely, the best leaders take a different approach. They think about the impact on their people and how the team is affected over what’s in their best interest.

This might seem obvious, but it’s far from. It’s easy to look through your lens rather than from the lens of others. This is one of the stark differences between servant and selfish leadership.

II. The growth and development of people is the highest calling of leadership.

Harvey S. Firestone

What it means:

Your title is temporary, but your impact on others is lasting. If you aren’t sure that's true, think about your mom or dad right now. There is a good chance that if I asked you to list three things, good or bad, you learned from them, it wouldn’t be hard for you. The reason is that their impact on you is lasting whether they know it or not.

The hard truth is regardless of the title, someone else will have it one day. It doesn’t matter if it’s the Pope, The President of the United States, or the CEO of your company; someone else will occupy it. So you might as well focus less on your title and more on the impact on those you get to lead.

III. Stay curious a little bit longer and rush to advice giving a little bit slower.

Michael Bungay Stanier

Michael Bungay Stanier said this during our podcast a few years ago and it stopped me in my tracks because I was so guilty of it in my leadership.

It’s easy to give an answer or solve a problem for a team member. It’s hard to bite your tongue and watch them struggle to find an answer themselves.

It reminds me of the idea: Easy now, hard later. Hard now, easy later.

The more you do the hard things now, the easier it will be later. Unfortunately, that is the opposite of how people think and act.
