How to Cultivate Effort in Employees That Outlasts Talent

You can fake many things, work ethic isn't one of them.

You can fake many things; work ethic isn’t one of them.

You have probably heard the famous management quote, “Leaders shouldn’t have to coach effort.”

In a perfect world, that’s true, but then you realize you are leading human beings. And you know all about the struggle to give your best effort daily.

Today is about effort.

Let’s get after it,

I. Effort beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard

Tim Notke

What it means:

You don’t get to control the God-given talent, but you do control how hard you work. Effort has always been challenging for leaders because they know the kind of effort that helps produce results, but they can’t choose effort for anyone else.

II. The reason most professionals operate below their potential isn’t a lack of talent; it’s a lack of effort.

What it means:

So many professionals operate below their potential. The reason isn’t a lack of talent; it’s a lack of effort. This comes from falling in love with comfort or not having leaders who challenge, expect, or inspire a certain kind of effort.

III. To maintain performance requires consistent effort. To advance performance requires relentless effort.

What it means:

In 1903, James Allen wrote the classic essay, As a Man Thinketh.  In it, he said, “The strength of the effort is the measure of the result.”  What Allen is saying is that all leaders and teams care about their results, but you don’t get results by focusing on the outcome.  You get the result by magnifying the collective effort daily.

Quit blaming front-line managers for everything.

- High Turnover
- Low Engagement

They could indeed be the problem, but rarely are they the only problem.

Don't just hold them accountable for results, set them up for success.
