Why Humility is Essential as a Modern Leader

Thinking of yourself less

In partnership with

There is no valid excuse for not being humble, because we have always, within and without, abundant reasons for humility.

If you care about humility in leadership, this week is for you.

I. Humility is no longer a nice to have, it’s a benchmark to effective leadership.

What it means:

Employees desire more authentic and transparent leaders. Those who genuinely prioritize their best interests, provide real-time feedback about their performance, and help develop their skills. Many managers and executives have taken note and have adopted a soft form of “servant leadership,” yet too often, it becomes someone who says the right things, but their true actions and intentions tell a completely different story.

What’s emerging now is the realization that being a highly effective leader depends on the depth of your humility.

II. Great leaders understand that the path to effective leadership is paved with humility, not pride.

What it means:

C.S. Lewis said, “Humility isn’t thinking less of yourself; it’s thinking of yourself less.”

What’s most remarkable is the vast majority of genuinely humble leaders have every reason, because of their accomplishments, to reject humility, but instead, they embrace it. They don’t just talk about it, but it’s been developed over years of hard work and character development.

III. It’s excruciating to work for someone that has an inflated sense of their importance or abilities.

What it means:

Unfortunately, most executives struggle to grasp the concept of humility because their current title and power create a false belief that they are above or more significant than others. So not only is it painful to work with them, but it’s excruciating to work for them.

P.S. We just got the video footage of the Accelerate Leadership Keynote. Check out one of my favorite stories about the difference in being interested vs. committed.

If you are looking for a speaker for your next event, this is what one of the participants said, “Most inspirational talk I have ever experienced. I texted my team during the talk to thank them for their efforts; I couldn't wait.”

Are Your Leaders Interested or Committed? (Video)

There is a big difference between being interested and being committed.

When someone is interested in something, you will never get their best and it's impossible to reach their potential.

Are the managers in your organization interested or committed to leadership?

If this resonates with you, share it with a leader who has demonstrated commitment.
