How to Lead When Your Stressed
Stress Makes You Stronger
You can do it. You were meant for and built for this. You wouldn’t be reading this if you couldn’t handle what difficulty is in front of you.
I don’t know anyone who likes stress, but I coach leaders who handle it better than others. Turns out there are things you can learn from them to improve yourself.
This week is for you if you care about leading more effectively in stressful situations.
I. Only leaders who are tested become great.
What it means:
Stress is a natural emotional, physical, or mental response to any demand that disrupts your equilibrium. It can be subjective because what might be stressful to you may not be for another.
Most people think of stress as inherently negative, but that’s not true. Stress can motivate, provide focus, and strengthen your ability to navigate it.
It is impossible to be great at anything without stress or tests in your life.
II. The words you say to yourself are the most important words you say.
What it means:
In stressful situations, it’s convenient to use extreme globalizing words like ‘can’t,’ ‘always,’ ‘never,’ ‘every time,’ or ‘never.’ However, these words create a sense of hopelessness, further increasing stress levels and making it easier to give up.
Using extreme globalizing words is harmful because the words you say to yourself are the most important words you say. Stop limiting what you and your team can do by using these lazy words.
You are creating a weaker version of yourself by telling your brain something that isn’t true to protect yourself.
III. Before you solve a problem, make sure it’s your problem.
What it means:
This principle hit me in the forehead like a brick. Taking on problems that aren’t yours to solve is a surefire way to add unwarranted stress to your life.
Since you might do this without knowing it, ask yourself a powerful question today: “What problem am I currently trying to solve that isn’t mind to solve?”
