Overcome Disappointment

How to turn Adversity into Success

Disappointment is a part of being a professional, especially if you care about success.

Lately, I have had a string of disappointing events, both personally and professionally. Instead of feeling sorry for myself (which I admittedly did), I decided to help you and, in the process, help myself.

If you are disappointed or have experienced disappointment recently, this week is for you:

I. You learn more about people by the way they handle disappointment, not success.

It’s easy to feel confident when everything is going well. You have a bounce in your step, a smile on your face, and a positive attitude that lasts for days. But the best way to decipher a person’s character isn’t when things are going well; it’s when things are going poorly.

Here is the problem, many people have been robbed of navigating failure. Whether it be from the helicopter parent or the micromanager led teams, too often, someone else has parachuted into a tough situation to remove the struggle.

II. Disappointment is the wakeup call that improvement is necessary.

What it means:

I summarize disappointment in the Accelerate Leadership Program as the gap between our expectations and reality.

Disappointment helps you better understand what is important to you as long as you examine the gap and identify the growth opportunities in the adversity. If you create the space, it can be a wakeup call that improvement is necessary.

When you take this approach, things that initially look like a burden are a blessing.

III. Disappointment requires desire.

Here is the reality: disappointment is part of life unless you have depressingly low standards. The best teams and leaders don’t set low standards; they raise them.

While no one says you must like disappointment, take solace in knowing that disappointment requires desire. So, if you are currently experiencing disappointment, you have aspirations and are willing to work to achieve them.

Now is not the time to run from your desire; run towards it even harder.

Have a day,
