Growth requires a double bounce.
Think back to a time when you grew the most in your career. Chances are, it didn’t happen in comfort. It happened because someone created tension, asked a hard question, posed an uncomfortable truth, or challenged you in a way you weren’t sure you could handle. And you responded.
That’s the double bounce. So if you’re committed to improving yourself or others, this week is for you.
I. Comfort is the god of our generation.
What it means:
This quote from Matt Chandler is tough to read because, if we are being honest, most of us could say that we define our lives by how comfortable we are. Which makes sense because there is undoubtedly a time and place for being comfortable. However, if progress is your goal, comfort becomes the enemy.
II. Growth requires input and response.
What it means:
Coaching works like a trampoline. The coach provides the first bounce with input, and the coachee provides the second bounce with response. Without both, progress stalls.
A coach can’t lift someone higher on their own. They can’t want it more than the person wants it for themselves. And while someone can improve with effort alone, the vast majority of people grow faster and stronger with the help of coaching.
III. Leaders create the bounce with questions, truth, belief, or challenge.
What it means:
In your next one-on-one, don’t settle for comfort. Ask a question that sparks reflection. Share a truth that grounds in reality. Offer encouragement that increases belief. Or push someone beyond their comfort zone. That’s how you create the bounce that lifts others higher.
