Say the word “courage,” and most people picture something big and bold. But in leadership, courage is often much smaller.
Having the difficult conversation even when you don’t feel like it.
Making a decisive decision when there are multiple options.
Doing what’s right even when it’s not convenient.
The truth is, every act of courage starts with uncertainty. And the moment you choose to act anyway, you encourage team members to do the same.
If you want to be that kind of leader, this week is for you.
I. People Don't Follow Titles, They Follow Courage
What it means:
Having a title like manager, supervisor, VP, or CEO doesn't automatically make you a leader people want to follow. Real leadership is demonstrated through courage, the willingness to take action even when the outcome is uncertain.
I was reminded of this while watching Braveheart with my 13-year-old as part of his development plan (yes, I have that for my kids as well). William Wallace, trying to unite the clans, looks at Robert the Bruce and says, “Men don’t follow titles, they follow courage.”
People naturally gravitate toward leaders who model bravery, authenticity, and resolve, rather than those who rely solely on authority or position.
II. Courage Isn’t the Absence of Fear; It’s the Decision to Move Forward Despite It
What it means:
You feel fear, uncertainty, and doubt just like anyone else. What sets you apart is your commitment to act despite these emotions.
Courage is about recognizing fear, facing it head-on, and making deliberate decisions to keep moving forward. This choice to act in the presence of fear is exactly what inspires trust and respect from others.
III. When You Lead Courageously, You Encourage Others Simultaneously
What it means:
Courage is contagious. When you choose courage, it doesn't stop with you; it encourages others simultaneously. To encourage someone else is to give them courage.
Since each courageous decision requires someone to step out of their comfort zone, borrowing courage is often required. By modeling courageous behavior, you actively create a culture of taking on challenges, despite the risk.
