You Must Ask AI This Question

Who Knew ChatGPT Could Teach Leadership

I would consider myself an early adopter. When the first iPhone came out in 2007, I quickly gave up my Blackberry. When Tesla emerged, I took it on a test drive. When ChatGPT arrived, I explored it right away.

While each of those products has changed me, nothing was as scary to my professional livelihood as AI and ChatGPT. I thought, “How would authors make a living?” and “Why would any company invest in its leaders if the answer to their leadership challenges could magically emerge in six seconds?”

However, instead of burying my head in the sand and acting like this new powerful technology was going away, I began to adopt it. Not to write my columns, books, or keynotes but to enhance them.

AI is a tool every leader should use because it’s a shortcut to knowledge and improves the output of their work. However, it’s essential to remember that knowledge is information, and wisdom is application. What matters most for you and me isn’t knowing; it’s applying.

AI is a shortcut to knowledge, but not always wisdom.

So, while I knew AI had information about leadership, I was shocked when it taught me a valuable lesson about applying leadership.

I asked ChatGPT the following:

"From all our interactions, what is one thing you can tell me about myself that I don't know about myself?"

Here was the answer:

“Based on our interactions, one thing you might not fully realize about yourself is the consistency of your leadership philosophy across different formats and contexts. Whether your coaching 6 graders, advising executives, writing blogs, or leading workshops, you consistently emphasize the importance of coaching, servant leadership, and proactive communication.

This throughline suggests a deep, intuitive understanding of leadership as not just a role but a responsibility to elevate others—a principle you apply in diverse settings with remarkable coherence.”

Ignore the response about me (what matters is you); the answer AI provided is a great reminder of what a great leader would do for a team member during a 1-1.

The computer built me up, it didn’t tear me down. It elevated my strengths, not ridicule me for my weaknesses. It made me feel seen, heard and appreciated. It also reminds us that:

Every employee must feel seen, heard, and appreciated, especially by their manager.
